Chinese Crested Dog Breeders

It may be difficult to find Chinese Crested Dog breeders, because this breed is rare. Though hairless dogs appeared long ago, they were developed in separate breeds only in the 20th century. The Chinese Crested Dog was developed in the 1920s by American breeders from little hairless dogs taken by the Chinese sailors from Africa. The true origin of hairless African dogs is unknown.

Most Chinese Crested Dog breeders try to produce hairless puppies, because they are more popular than the Powderpuff variety of the breed. The gene responsible for the lack of hair is dominant in this breed, but having two copies of the Hairless allele is lethal for the embryo. The Powderpuff gene cannot be bred out of the breed’s gene pool, as it’s carried by all dogs of this breed. Powderpuff puppies can be born even if both parents are hairless, but two Powderpuffs cannot produce a hairless puppy, as they don’t have a gene responsible for lack of hair.

Responsible Chinese Crested Dog breeders do their best to prevent typical genetic disorders in the breed. Though this breed is free from most health issues typical of other toy breeds, it has its own concerns. The gene responsible for hairlessness is linked to dental problems, so many hairless dogs have missing or crowded teeth and are prone to teeth decay. Some Hairless dogs have a primitive mouth with all teeth being pointy. Eye problems in this breed are also a genetic issue. Allergy and autoimmune problems may be very serious in the Chinese Crested Dog. Many disorders can be prevented by screening the breeding stock and breeding only healthy dogs. Difficulties in producing healthy puppies explain why the price for high quality Chinese Crested Dogs is very high.

This breed is very special and needs a special care. To look neat and stylish, these little creatures should be brushed, trimmed, and even shaved regularly. Their eyes, ears, nails, coat, and skin need special attention to be healthy and beautiful. Chinese Crested Dog breeders are responsible for the health of the puppy, but the well-being and health of an adult dog depend on the owner.
